5 min from Hanmer Springs
From the village, head east along Jollies Pass Road, and turn left onto McIntyre Rd. Follow the signs as this continues into Mullans Road, at the end of which is a small car park and an information panel indicating the entrance to Hanmer Forest Park. Waterfall Track starts here.
You can easily start you walk in the village by utilising the extensive trail network. Dog Stream Walkway leads directly to the Waterfall car park. See map for route options.
The benched track climbs the narrow, steep-sided valley of Dog Stream on the southern flanks of Mt Isobel, through native vegetation of mountain beech, broadleaf kanuka and marbleleaf. There are also many self-seeded douglas fir. During autumn and winter the receives very little sunlight; most of the steeper sections of the track have staircases, though other parts can be muddy and icy in places.
Before reaching the waterfall, you’ll pass two track junctions; the first with Spur Track, which is a good option on the return leg. The second is a connecting track to Mt Isobel Track, the latter of which climbs from Clarence Valley Rd to Mt Isobel summit.
Dog Stream Waterfall is at the end of the track. The 41 m-high ribbon-type waterfall flows gracefully over a moss-covered bluff. The track ends here.
On the return leg, the easiest option is to head back the way you came.
Spur Track
Alternatively you can backtrack a few hundreds metres to the junction with Spur Track. Spur Track sidles the flank of the mountain for a kilometre then enters plantation forest, where it descends a spur, eventually connecting with Nature Trail loop, a short distance downhill from where you began at Waterfall car park.
