10 min from Greymouth
From Greymouth, head north on SH6 to Runanga. Turn right onto Seddon St then right onto Ballance St, where there is a parking area at the end.
From Ballance St, the track enters mature beech-podocarp forest and sidles the terrace above the Coal Creek gully before gradually descending down to run parallel creek. The track is benched, and well-drained and graded.
After 1.7 km the track ends at Coal Creek Falls. A bench provides a view of the falls and steps lead down to the creek edge. The fan waterfall, reportedly 7 m high, flows across the exposed mudstone bedrock. You can swim in the pool beneath the falls.
Return the way you came.
