Access

1 hr 15 min from Nelson | 1 hr from Blenheim

The track start is located inland of Canvastown, 79 km from Nelson and 66 km from Blenheim. At Canvastown, turn off State Highway 6 onto Wakamarina Valley Road, and head up the valley for 16 km to the road end. Here you’ll see a DOC sign indicating the track start, as well as Butchers Flat campsite next to Wakamarina River. There is a small area for car parking at the road end.

Description

From the car park, the first 1.5 km of the track is a 4WD road, which heads through native forest. After 1.9 km Doom Creek Loop Track branches to the left; this is a 4.3 km loop track that follows the narrow gorge of Doom Creek past historic gold workings. The track surface for the first few kilometres is clay, which can be quite greasy when wet. The track bridges the gorge of the beautifully-clear Fosters Creek, and the other end of Doom Creek Loop Track connects on the left.

The vegetation for the next kilometre is regenerating scrub; presumably the hill side has been cleared several times in the past, and appears to be heavily-browsed. After 4.5 km the track enters stunning original native bush, with many tree ferns, kamahi, large rimu and a thick undergrowth of crown ferns. The track contours the hillside high above Wakamarina River, weaving in and out of unnamed creek gullies. You will reach Devils Creek Hut after 6.2 km. The hut is a short distance off the main track and is positioned in a grassy clearing, on a terrace high above Wakamarina River.

Devils Creek Hut is a junction between Wakamarina Track and Mt Royal Track.

Wakamarina Track continues beyond Devils Creek Hut, zig-zagging upward through beech forest toward point 1066 m, after which it drops downs and sidles the upper catchment of Foster Creek, reaching Fosters Clearing and Fosters Hut soon after. Devils Creek Hut to Fosters Hut is 8.4 km (3 hr).

There are remains of historic stone huts not too far beyond Devils Creek Hut. From the hut, continue along Wakamarina Track for a short distance until you reach a fork in the track; instead of turning left uphill toward Fosters Hut, take the right fork and follow Devils Creek valley for 1.7 km to the remains of the huts, which were built by gold prospectors. Allow 1 hr return from Devils Creek Hut. Return the way you came.

Mt Royal Track bridges Devils Creek next to the hut and heads up a long spur toward the summit of Mt Royal (1365 m), 4.7 km away. The track continues down the Wairau Valley side of Mt Royal, descending down into Quartz Creek Valley and reaching the road end 13.8 km (8-9 hr) from Devils Creek Hut.
